Volunteer of the Month: Cantor Mark Perman

Why do you volunteer for the ACC? How do you make time for it in your busy schedule?

It’s important to give something back. I had benefited by being a member for twelve years since graduation. I felt really strongly about developing a group to deal with issues that are important to members of the Conference. This was a way I could make a contribution since there was a need to come together as peers in a forum for sharing. I felt I could give back with this group. At first I was not sure about what the reaction would be but I got a lot of support – first from Richard Cohn and then from Kay Greenwald and also from Rosalie Boxt.

I make time by generally scheduling conference calls on my day off or I schedule them early before things get busy. I try to make time and prioritize my schedule. The focus group is a priority for me.

What projects are you currently involved in with the ACC? What past involvements have given you exceptional memories?

I enjoy being involved with the social action group in addition to the Focus Group I created. I have a nice memory of meeting face to face and talk at the first conference after the focus group began. It was good to meet the face behind the voice.

How do you try to inspire Jewish young people?

By being a living example, by reaching out to those interested in music and theatre and by reaching out to those who have potential and being enthusiastic and through my love of Jewish music. I try to embody a spiritual example by who I am and encourage them to explore a spiritual side to their life.

What do you like to do completely unrelated to your cantorate?

I play tennis and bowl. I like journaling and writing and politics. I read and study politics.

Any final thoughts?

I would love to have new members of the focus group!
