ACC statement on Central Synagogue Attack

August 15, 2026

The American Conference of Cantors are angered and saddened by the attack on the bimah of Central Synagogue during Shabbat services last night.

We are grateful to the fast acting congregants, security personnel, and police officers on-site who managed to subdue the attacker and remove him from the premises.

We are proud of the reaction of the clergy and staff including our member, Cantor Jenna Pearsall, who “did not let the music stop.” As Rabbi Angela Buchdahl said in a statement, “our congregation refused to let hate extinguish our Shabbat light.”

Antisemitic attacks on synagogues, businesses, and individuals are on the rise. As we enter the month of Elul, a time of reflection as we approach the High Holy Days, we call on officials and community leaders to come together to address the rise of hate and violence against the Jewish community. We continue to work and pray for a time when all can worship in peace and safety.
