As a wave of anti-queer and anti-trans legislation sweeps the country, the Human Rights Campaign declared a state of emergency for queer and trans people in 2023. In this session we will prepare rabbis, cantors, and educators to address this crisis. Participants will gain the spiritual care tools they need to build welcoming sanctuaries for LGBTQ+ people in this storm of hatred.

Session II

With Elliot Kukla and a Trans Clinician

This second two-hour session will build on the learning of the first session, but focus on the needs of trans adults and kids. We will explore the unique grief and loss that trans people are facing right now as the world changes, chevrah kadisha for nonbinary folks, how to ritually celebrate trans milestones like name changes privately and/or from the bimah, and how to build safety and resilience for trans and nonbinary kids using the tools of Jewish tradition. Participants will have opportunities for small group discussions to surface confidential issues in their own communities.
