Prayer for Peace, by Gershon Kingsley

In cantorial school, when we learned the classic settings of Max Helfman and Herbert Fromm of Grant Us Peace we studied how those two masters had seamlessly blended cantorial-esque chant with solidly mid-20th century American harmonies. They were (and are!) textbook examples of Union Prayer Book-style English language settings that are rooted in traditional, ethnically-charged Ashkenazic prayer modes.

A Fascinating Window into the World of the Poor People’s Campaign

On February 8th at 9th, I attended a significant portion of the National Theomusicology and Movement Arts Convening for the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The program brought together about 100 musicians, visual artists, dancers, spiritual leaders, organizers, and documentarians from over 30 states. Participants journeyed from as far as Alaska to join these days of learning, music, and community in Raleigh, NC.

Worship Music Toolkit for Small Congregations

The ACC and the URJ are jointly working on a Worship Music Toolkit for Small Congregations. It consists of sheet music, videos of cantors singing, clips of cantors explaining the liturgy behind the music, and additional music resources. It is intended exclusively for small congregations (250 and under) who do not have a cantor or a soloist on staff. The first unit, which focuses on Friday evening worship, is now available to small congregations in the ACC-URJ Music Toolkit group in The Tent.

A Mishkan Amidst the Storm

On the morning of Election Day, Hillary Clinton’s chances of defeating Donald Trump stood at 85%, according to The New York Times. With only four minutes left in the Super Bowl, the Atlanta Falcons’ chances of defeating the New England Patriots stood at 92%, according to ESPN. Two days ago, at the Oscars, La La Land’s chances of defeating Moonlight for Best Picture stood at 100% after the presenters incorrectly announced its victory. And yet today, Moonlight is Best Picture, the Patriots are Super Bowl champs, and Donald Trump is President of the United States.

"Whoever practices charity and justice fills the world with loving kindness" - Talmud; Sukkah

We are excited to join many of you at the next ACC/GTM Convention, June 25-29, 2017 at Red Rock Resort Spa and Casino in Summerlin, NV. Inspired by combining Las Vegas' reputation with our own musical twist, the motto of this year's convention is "Ir HaShir: Sing City!" What happens in Vegas won't stay in Vegas!
