ACC Acknowledges Endowment and Dedication of the School of Sacred Music

January 31, 2011

CHICAGO, IL. Debbie Friedman has been a lifelong spokesperson for the meaning and power of Jewish music. Her music inspired people to become members of the clergy. We, the American Conference of Cantors, wish to recognize the generosity of the recent endowment in her honor to the School of Sacred Music. This gift guarantees permanent financial support to the mission of the SSM which will be able to continue in perpetuity to train the best and most inspiring cantors to elevate and awaken the souls and spirits of the Jewish people. Debbie Friedman brought her talent and devotion to our Jewish musical heritage, her desire to bring and create new and fresh sounds to enrich the aesthetic and emotional experience of prayer. A devoted faculty member at the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music, an honorary member of the American Conference of Cantors, Debbie imparted her unique gifts to current and future cantors, whom she held in the highest regard. Over the years, she worked with the American Conference of Cantors in creating meaningful and relevant Jewish prayer and music. How profoundly grateful we all are to the donors whose extraordinary generosity both honors Debbie’s memory and ensures for future generations
a dynamic and vibrant cantorate!
