Cantor Tanya Greenblatt

Secretary

Cantor Tanya Greenblatt is honored to serve as secretary of the American Conference of Cantors, having previously served the ACC as an Executive Board member (2006 – 2010), chair of the Social Action and Justice Committee and representative to the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism (2005 – 2010) and member of the Nominations Committee (2004.)  She has also had the privilege of serving on several other ACC committees and task forces.  Cantor Greenblatt was a member of the HUC-JIR SSM Alumni Association Leadership Council (2008 – 2010,) and has also been the North Florida representative to the URJ Southeast Council Social Action Committee.

From 2005–2007 Cantor Greenblatt served on the board of directors (president 2007) of Florida Impact, an organization dedicated to reducing hunger and poverty in Florida by enlisting the people of Florida to secure justice for and with those whose economic rights have not been realized.  She enjoys representing the Jewish community at local and state events, and takes particular pride in working collaboratively with interfaith clergy to give voice to those whose voices would otherwise not be heard.

In July 2011, Cantor Greenblatt joins the Temple Beth Am family in Jupiter, Florida, after serving as Cantor of Temple Israel in Tallahassee, Florida for the past seven years. Upon graduating cum laude from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, she studied at the Jerusalem and New York campuses of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, earning a Master of Sacred Music degree from the School of Sacred Music, and Investiture as a Cantor in May 2003. Her Master’s project was entitled “Shalshellet Ha’Shirah, Noah Schall, a Living Link in the Chain of Hazzanic Tradition.” As a student, she was awarded the ACC Cantorial Prize, Guild of Temple Musicians Prize, Cantor Walter Davidson Prize and Cantor Brian Miller Memorial Award to a student who has shown a great love for and excelled in the art of traditional Chazzanut.
Before moving to Florida, Cantor Greenblatt served congregations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York, worked as a Cantorial Intern at Transcontinental Music, and participated in a UJA/Federation teacher exchange and collaborative curriculum building pilot program with Israeli teachers.  She has taught voice privately and performs regularly in concerts of Broadway, classical and Cantorial music.

Other affiliations include the Zamir Choral Foundation, Cantor’s Assembly, FOCAS (Florida Organization of Cantors, Associates and Soloists), NATE (National Association of Temple Educators) and Hadassah.
Cantor Greenblatt’s primary goal as a Cantor is to be an integral part of the congregation and participate in all aspects of congregational life, in partnership with the Rabbi and in collaboration with lay leaders, staff and congregants.  “There are opportunities for holiness in every interaction, and I measure my success by my ability to create, foster, share and appreciate those moments of holiness. Music transcends all barriers to create a spiritual, prayerful and religious experience, and praying with a congregation is the most authentic form of music I know, requiring total immersion and trust.  I can make a difference in people’s lives through my singing and praying, but the most meaningful and lasting impressions come from personal relationships with students of all ages.”

She and her husband, Scott, an attorney, are excited about their upcoming move to Jupiter with their dogs, Natasha and Karly, and their cat, Fermata.  They enjoy long walks with the dogs, and look forward to exploring the area and spending time at the beach.  Other interests include Latin dancing, cooking and entertaining at home.
